Perimenopause & Menopause Weight Loss for Women Over 35 Who Feel Like Their Body Has Changed.

Women often experience sudden weight gain during perimenopause and menopause, even when diet and exercise stay the same. Hormonal changes affect metabolism, sleep, cortisol levels and insulin sensitivity, making fat loss much harder after 40. As a clinical nutritionist specialising in perimenopause weight loss and menopause weight management, I help women understand what is happening in their body and create a personalised plan to support sustainable fat loss, improve gut health and regain energy.

Why Women Gain Weight During Perimenopause and Menopause

Perimenopause is the transitional phase leading up to menopause, typically starting in your mid-30s and lasting anywhere from 4 to 10 years, some women even 15 years (everyone is very different). During this time, your body undergoes hormonal changes that affect various aspects of your health, including weight. One of the most common symptoms is weight gain, particularly around the abdomen, which happens even if you haven’t changed your diet or exercise routine. This is due to hormonal fluctuations that slow down your metabolism, making it harder to lose weight.

Along with weight gain, other symptoms of perimenopause include heavy periods and clotting, rage, mood swings, hot flashes (closer to menopause but not for everyone), night sweats, sleep disturbances, low energy and fatigue, decreased libido, joint and muscle pain, and brain fog. Menopause, which officially starts after 12 consecutive months without a period, marks the end of the reproductive years. Understanding these symptoms and how they affect your body is important so you can manage it effectively.

An Introduction to This Stage of Life

I focus on helping women with menopause and perimenopause weight loss, gut health and energy levels in New Zealand and overseas. However, first, we need to ask ourselves, what is perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause?

What is Perimenopause

Perimenopause is the transitional phase before menopause, usually starting in a woman’s mid-30s to early 40s, and can last 4-10 years or longer for some. During this time, hormonal fluctuations cause symptoms like irregular periods, heavy bleeding, rage, mood swings and weight gain. Sleep disturbances, joint pain, and fatigue are also common. Hormone levels gradually decrease, making this phase challenging, but lifestyle changes like proper nutrition and exercise can help manage symptoms.

What is Menopause

Menopause occurs when a woman has gone 12 months without a period, typically around age 50. It marks the end of menstruation and significant drops in oestrogen and progesterone. Common symptoms include hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, and mood changes. These changes can affect quality of life, but symptoms vary widely in intensity and duration among women.

What is Post Menopause

Postmenopause begins after 12 consecutive months without a period and continues for life. Many menopause symptoms, like hot flashes, subside, but the lower oestrogen levels may increase the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease. Symptoms like vaginal dryness and decreased libido can persist, so ongoing health management, including exercise and regular check-ups, is important for long-term well-being.
